The Southwest Allergy Forum, with the acronym of SWAF, is the oldest (60-plus years) and still-in-existence Allergy organization. SWAF has no Constitution, By-Laws, Officers, Membership list or Dues which may be why it is still in existence. Every attendee of a SWAF meeting automatically becomes a member. SWAF is a Not-for-profit Organization.
SWAF began in the late 30s or early 40s when a small group of Allergists from several of the Southwestern States, i.e. Arkansas, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, would meet annually in various cities to exchange ideas and experiences about Allergy in an informal format, hence the term Southwest Allergy Forum. These early pioneers in Allergy were Harvey Black, Ralph Bowen, A. H. Braden, Sr., William Browning, Alan Cazort, L. O. Dutton, Stan Hampton, DeWitt Hotchkiss, Sim Hulsey, Homer Prince, Boen Swinny, Sr., Ford Wolf, Sr. and others. For all these years SWAF was similar to a floating crap game moving from city to city depending upon who volunteered to be host for the next Annual Meeting.
During the 1996 meeting in Santa Fe, NM, Dr. A. H. Redmon, Jr. was appointed Executive Director to restructure SWAF. In 1998, SWAF became a legal subsidiary of the Dora Bastiani Redmon Memorial Research Foundation, a 501(c) 3 Tax-exempt and Not-for-profit Corporation on file with the State of Texas and the Internal Revenue Service. SWAF has a tax ID number, #76-0537347, as a DBA subsidiary of the Foundation.
The purpose of this Regional Allergy organization is to plan and conduct clinical and scientific CME meetings annually on Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology in an informal and exhibitor-friendly atmosphere. This involves active participation of the State Allergy Societies of Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas and other Regional Allergy Societies and the Mexican Allergy Society. Allergists and other physicians from the United States, Canada and Mexico are invited to attend and participate. The next meeting will be at the Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, January 14-18, 2009.
